Dennis Doros Elected President of the Association of Moving Image Archivists

Dennis Doros, co-owner of Milestone Films, has been elected president of the international Association of Moving Image Archivists. Doros will be inducted into office at the annual AMIA Conference in New Orleans November 29 – December 2, when he will begin a two-year term. He succeeds Andrea Kalas, who has led the organization forward for the past two years.

AMIA, Boston Light & Sound, Film Foundation Host 35mm Projection Workshop

The Association of Moving Image Archivists and Boston Light & Sound, in partnership with Martin Scorsese’s non-profit organization The Film Foundation, will host a three-day, intermediate-level film projection workshop offering expert-led training in the proper handling and presentation of 35mm film in theaters. The hands-on, educational event takes place October 30 through November 1 at Boston Light & Sound in Boston.

AMIA Webinars Address Latest Media Preservation Practices

The Association of Moving Image Archivists will present a series of online webinars in partnership with the Northwest Document Conservation Center. The webinars, designed to educate professionals in the archive and preservation communities on the latest processes impacting their work, begin October 12 and run through November 2, and are priced individually.

U-M Adds to Welles Archive

A new set of materials from Orson Welles’ daughter will make the University of Michigan Library's Orson Welles collection the world's most comprehensive resource for Welles scholars and fans. The daughter of the renowned filmmaker and Italian actress Paola Mori, Beatrice Welles had a particularly extraordinary childhood. She was brought up jet setting to different countries, playing on various film sets, interacting mostly with adults (her parents and their friends), and falling asleep to the rhythmic sounds of her father working on his typewriter late into every night.

MTI Film Releases DRS Nova 2.3

MTI Film has released DRS Nova 2.3, an upgrade to its software for digital film restoration. The new release includes a host of new and enhanced features created in response to requests from restoration professionals worldwide. All are aimed at making such tasks as dust busting, image stabilization and de-warping faster and easier.

MTI Film recently completed an all-new 4K restoration of director Lewis Milestone’s 1931 film The Front Page. The months-long project was conducted for The Academy Film Archive and The Film Foundation, with MTI Film’s restoration team working under the direction of AFA director Michael Pogorzelski and film preservationist Heather Linville.

Roundabout Restores Zeffirelli’s Romeo & Juliet

Roundabout Entertainment recently collaborated with Paramount Pictures and Park Circus on a luminous, 4K-restoration of Franco Zeffirelli’s 1968 classic Romeo and Juliet. The restored film is currently enjoying a new theatrical run as part of Shakespeare Lives, a worldwide program of special events commemorating the 400th anniversary of the Bard’s death. The project was made possible through funding from the British Council and the British Film Institute.

AMIA Film Projection Workshop Convenes in Austin August 22

AMIA and the Alamo Drafthouse, in partnership with The Film Foundation, are offering a three day projection workshop for projectionists and staff presenting 35mm film in theaters. The workshop offers speakers and hands-on tutorials for projectionists working with 35mm film prints and will focus on film preparation and projection as well as special stipulations for archival projection, and coordinating with lending institutions. The workshop is aimed at those who have some booth experience and are looking to expand their knowledge and skills.
