David Burke Taking on New Role at Laika

Animation studio Laika’s chief marketing officer David Burke has added chief operating officer to his responsibilities at the company. Burke joined Laika in 2019 from Universal Pictures, where he had been general manager for the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland since 2006. The promotion was announced today by Travis Knight, president, and CEO, to whom Burke will continue to report.

Chris Meledandri to Receive CinemaCon Excellence in Animation Award

Chris Meledandri will receive this year’s CinemaCon Award of Excellence in Animation, Mitch Neuhauser, managing director of CinemaCon, announced today. CinemaCon, the official convention of the National Association of Theatre Owners, will be held April 24-27 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. Meledandri will be presented with this special honor at the Big Screen Achievement Awards ceremony taking place on the evening of April 27 at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace and hosted by official presenting sponsor The Coca-Cola Company.

Seattle’s MoPop Showcases Laika

Seattle’s Museum of Pop Culture is an internationally known, leading nonprofit dedicated to the ideas and risk-taking that fuel contemporary popular culture. New to MoPOP this year is the world premiere exhibition, Hidden Worlds: The Films of Laika, a partnership with the award-winning animation studio Laika, which was founded in Oregon in 2005 by president and CEO, Travis Knight.

Vancouver Film School Graduates Worked on Oscar-Winning Movies

Vancouver Film School has announced that 82 Oscar winners out of 130 total nominees were VFS alumni who graduated from there and worked on Oscar winning projects. Winning projects for Best Visual Effects included 31 alumni for Avatar: The Way of Water and six alumni for Best Animated Film for Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio.

Laika Names Matt Levin President Live-Action Film and Series

The Oregon-based animation studio Laika has named longtime Netflix executive Matt Levin as president, live-action film and series. In addition to being in production on its sixth animated movie Wildwood, the studio is currently developing its first ever live-action project, a film based on acclaimed screenwriter John Brownlow’s (The Miniaturist, Sylvia) action thriller novel Seventeen.
