AMIA to Bestow Preservation Awards at Annual Conference

At this year’s Association of Moving Image Archivists annual conference in Baltimore, four awards will be presented by the organization to individuals and organizations that have demonstrated exceptional work in the areas of preservation. The ceremony will take place on November 14 at the Parkway Theatre in Baltimore, where the convention runs from November 13-16.

Caranicas Named Recipient of First HPA Legacy Award

The Hollywood Professional Association and the HPA Awards Committee have announced that respected journalist Peter Caranicas will be honored with the HPA Legacy Award. Caranicas is the first recipient of the honor. Given only at the discretion of the HPA Awards Committee and HPA Board of Directors, the HPA Legacy Award honors inspiring leaders, mentors, influencers, and those who have made consistent and valuable contributions to the industry. The award will be bestowed on November 21 at the 14th annual HPA Awards gala at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles.

Ziva Dynamics Wins Monolith Award for Ziva VFX

Ziva Dynamics has won the Monolith Award for Technology for its flagship simulation software, Ziva VFX. The annual award is presented to the achievement that represents “the most outstanding innovations in technology" across the media and entertainment industry. It was presented live to Ziva Dynamics on November 9 at the Infinity Festival in Hollywood.

NYWIFT Announces Third Annual Online Shorts Festival

The trade association New York Women in Film and Television has partnered with GoIndieTV to showcase showcase the work of its talented membership through the third annual NYWIFT Online Shorts Festival. Members are invited to submit their short films, TV pilots and webisodes to the festival, which will run on GoIndieTV.com and on Roku for public viewing in early 2020.

Cineworld Creates Wales' Most Immersive Theatre

Cineworld has renovated its Newport Spytty Park theatre with three premium formats to create the most immersive cinema in Wales. Mo Williams, general manager of Cineworld Newport Spytty Park said, “We are absolutely delighted to be the first in the area to open 4DX, ScreenX and Superscreen [auditoriums] in the one cinema. I can’t wait to welcome movie fans from Newport and beyond to visit the most immersive cinema in Wales.”

Supercines Installs Ecuador’s First Laser Projectors

Supercines, Ecuador’s leading cinema chain, has opened a new eight-screen multiplex in the Ambato shopping mall equipped with Christie Vive Audio and Christie RGB pure laser cinema projectors, the first of their kind in the country. The multiplex lobby also uses 60 Christie Access LCD panels to advertise upcoming movies and promotions.

SMPTE Hollywood Section to Explore Deepfakes

The Hollywood Section of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers will examine the promise, and potential peril, of digital humans and so-called deepfakes at its monthly meeting November 19, in Hollywood. Held in tandem with the Radio, Television, Digital Newsroom Association, the free event will include a panel discussion of experts in the emerging field of synthetic humans.

Red Names Alan Piper Managing Director for EMEA

Red Digital Cinema has named Alan Piper managing director for Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Piper, a veteran in the industry with previous experience at Red, will oversee operations, sales, marketing, services, and customer relationships in the region, while expanding the company’s interface with post-production facilities. He will be based in the Red offices at Pinewood Studios and will manage the launch of Red’s new storefront facility in Soho early next year.
