The message from Barco at CinemaCon 2017 is that the company is delivering the future of cinema today, powering immersive entertainment experiences from the lobby to the auditorium and beyond. Featuring the brightest RGB Flagship and smart laser projectors, immersive digital lobby experiences, a unique panoramic storytelling platform, and lifelike 3D sound, Barco raises the bar for memorable movie experiences.
Representatives from the European digital cinema technology and services company Ymagis Group returned to Hollywood last week to give private demos of their ÉclairColor process at the Harmony Gold theatre on Sunset Boulevard. Presenting side-by-side clips from last year’s release The Neon Demon, they showed high dynamic range images with high contrast, deep blacks, excellent highlight detail and vibrant colors.
In ever increasing numbers, exhibitors around the world are making the transition to laser projection. In response to that, at CinemaCon 2017 Barco will unveil the DP4K-40LHC and 20LHC RGB Flagship, 6P 3D single chassis, integrated high contrast projectors to the American audience. But nowhere in the new projectors’ specs will you find the term high dynamic range, which, given their capabilities seems like an oversight. Barco has a specific explanation for this, namely that it believes the exhibition world needs an HDR standard.
NEC today announced the availability of the NC1700L in its digital cinema projector series, a dual-laser digital cinema projector featuring richer colors, brighter images, and reduced cost of ownership.
Major Cineplex, the largest cinema operator in Thailand, has chosen Christie’s laser projection system for its flagship auditorium, Paragon Cineplex. Located on the fifth floor of the Siam Paragon shopping mall in the heart of the city, Paragon Cineplex comprises 16 screens and 5,000 seats, and is well known as Thailand's largest cineplex. With this installation, Major Cineplex will be the first exhibitor in Thailand to deploy Christie’s pinnacle RGB laser projection system.
The 17-screen Taichung Showtime Cinemas located within the new Taichung Showtime Plaza is the first cinema in Taiwan to be equipped with a Christie RGB laser projection system. In addition, all screens feature a Christie Vive Audio cinema sound system.
AMC Theatres and Dolby Laboratories have opened the 50th Dolby Cinema at AMC at AMC Rosedale 14 in Roseville, Minnesota. “Reaching the major milestone of 50 Dolby Cinema at AMC locations is a direct result of the outstanding reaction we have received from moviegoers nationwide,” said Doug Darrow, senior vice president, cinema business group, Dolby Laboratories. “Our fast-paced growth is a testament to the shared commitment by Dolby and AMC to deliver movie lovers a best-in-class entertainment experience.”
Wanda Cinema Line has opened its tenth Dolby Cinema location in China opened at its Beijing Fengtai Wanda Square site. Wanda’s Legendary Pictures’ The Great Wall is the first movie shown at the new theatre. The movie set a record high Dolby Cinema box office total in the market.
Four new titles are being added to the growing slate of movies to be shown at Dolby Cinema locations around the globe. They include Sony Pictures’ Passengers, due out December 21; Warner Bros. Pictures’ Live by Night, due out January 13; Paramount Pictures’ xXx: Return of Xander Cage, due out January 20; and Focus Features’ The Coldest City, due out July 28.
Arcadia Cinema in Melzo, Italy has installed a Cinemeccanica Lux 50K laser projection system, which delivers 50,000 lumens on Christie 4230 projectors. The theatre also has a Dolby Atmos sound system. The first screening will be December 15 with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
