Smitty’s Cinemas was the brainchild of four brothers from Merrimac, Massachusetts who opened a single-screen cinema pub in early 1992. The idea of eating in big, comfortable chairs while watching a movie was an instant hit, and people are now enjoying five Smitty’s Cinemas across Maine and New Hampshire. The New England chain has installed laser projectors – NEC NC1100Ls – in several theatres. I recently spoke with one of the brothers, Tucker Smith, about their business model and about the new projectors.
Esteban Sune is the fourth generation of his Argentinian family in the exhibition business. His great grandfather opened the family’s first theatre in 1910 to show silent films. Some eighty years later, the theater concept changed from the big single screen houses to multiplexes and Cinemacenter was born. Sune, the company’s managing director, recently installed his country’s first laser projector – an NEC NC1100L. I spoke with him about that experience and about the exhibition business in general.
CinemaCity and Prime Cinemas, part of the World Media Holding group, will install seven of Barco’s laser projectors in their flagship cinemas, to open early 2016 in the Mall of Qatar in Doha, Qatar and Abdali Mall in Amman, Jordan, respectively. Italian cinema projector technology company, Cinemeccanica, and Euromax, the European Association for Giant Screen and Documentary Cinema, have announced a significant partnership and demonstration of Digital Laser Projection on the Giant Screen at the 2015 Euromax Meeting. This year’s event will be hosted by giant screen theatre venue, La Géode, Paris, from June 7-9 and will feature the European premiere of many new giant screen films. The annual Euromax meeting attracts professionals from the industries of Giant Screen Cinema, Technology, and 3D documentary cinema.

At CinemaCon 2015 the companies debuted Lux, an aftermarket 6P laser light engine, compatible with Series 2 cinema DLP projectors.
Nordisk Film Biografer has chosen the Barco DP4K-60L laser projector to power the main premium large format screen of its multiplex in the Field’s shopping and entertainment center in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Christie has officially announced its laser projection system platform and products. Anchored by the Christie Freedom laser illumination system, the Christie Solaria CP42LH (Cinema), Christie D4K60LH (ProVenue) and Christie Mirage 4KLH (Immersive Environments) models are now available for widespread adoption, having been field proven with key Christie customers in 2014/2015 in both publicly announced and non-disclosed installations.
