ASC Completes StEM2 Test Packages

The American Society of Cinematographers has completed its Standard Evaluation Material II project. The short film is an initiative by the organization to provide standardized viewing material designed to aid in the development and calibration of technology impacting the modern imaging chain. StEM2 test packages will be available in early 2022 to download for free in all common theatrical and home TV formats.

Big Pic Delivers 4K HDR Monitoring Technology to Evolutions

Big Pic Media has delivered 4K high dynamic range monitoring, display calibration and mastering systems to Evolutions, one of Britain's largest independent post-production companies. The project forms part of ongoing investment in new resources. It includes four Sony BVM-HX310 4K HDR master monitors, an MTI Film Cortex Enterprise mastering and validation system and a Portrait Display Calman Ultimate display calibration bundle.

Supplied by MTI Film distribution partner Big Pic Media, the Cortex forms part of Gorilla's investment in new 4K HDR technology.

The Science of Color

Catherine Meininger is a color scientist at Portrait Displays in Edmonds, Washington. She graduated from the Rochester Institute of Technology in 2018 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Motion Picture Science. “I’ve always had an interest in audio and video post-production and thought for the longest time that my career was going to be video editing,” she told me in a conversation via email. “However, while attending college, I discovered an industry where I could use my skills in math and science alongside my creative interests, and ended up finding a career that pleased both the left and right sides of my brain. I still practice audio and video editing on the side, but my main passions now lie in color science and psychophysics.” She is also already a longtime member of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers and is a SMPTE volunteer and two-time presenter at the associations' annual Fall conference.

The comic book Dystopia tells the story of Jessica Hyde, a young girl on the run from the evil Mr. Rabbit, who holds Jessica’s scientist father captive and forces him to create unthinkable biological horrors. Written and illustrated by an anonymous artist, Dystopia has earned legions of fans, some of whom have found far deeper meaning in its pages and believe clues to real-world viruses and pandemics are layered into its artwork. One such group of obsessives, who have only known each other through their online interactions, come together and finally meet in person for Fringe Con, where an unwitting couple has plans to auction the recently discovered original artwork for Utopia, Dystopia’s unpublished and never-before-seen sequel.

Wanying to Open Ten New Dolby Cinemas

Dolby Laboratories and China’s Wanying Cinema Line today announced that the two companies have strengthened cooperation to further extend the Dolby Cinema experience to more moviegoers with a plan to add more than ten additional Dolby Cinema locations across China. Wanying Cinema Line is wholly owned by China Resources Land, a leading commercial real estate company in China.
