The American Society of Cinematographers has re-elected Kees van Oostrum as president, who will serve his third consecutive term at the organization.
The Laser Illuminated Projector Association reports that as of the end of 2017, the global installed base of high-end RGB laser projectors had reached nearly 700, an increase of nearly 100 percent since 2016, according to industry analysts at IHS Markit. In addition, the analyst firm also reported that, according to industry sales figures estimates, the number of laser phosphor projectors installed in cinemas has now surpassed 10,000; again an approximately 100 percent growth rate over the previous year.

Yes, there are months when box office numbers are down but those are dramatically offset by months where people of all ages fill the seats for the newest big movie. Yes, there are, and always will be, competition for moviegoers’ time and attention, but nothing will ever replace the big screen experience. Period.
The Event Cinema Association today announced that founder and managing director Melissa Cogavin has mutually agreed with the board of directors to resign her position. The board has elected to manage the day-to-day running of the ECA for an interim period and will be seeking a replacement for Cogavin in the near future.

The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers has issued a call for technical manuscript proposals for the SMPTE 2018 Annual Technical Conference & Exhibition, which will be held October 23-25 at a new venue, the Westin Bonaventure Hotel & Suites in downtown Los Angeles. Authors must submit their proposals by May 28.
