Leading event cinema distributor Fathom Events today reported that 26 of its titles grossed more than $1 million each at the box office in 2017. This statistic sets a new record and is a significant achievement over the company’s 2016 box office success of 14 titles passing this threshold, further demonstrating the increasing value and audience interest in event cinema.

As the digital cinema era enters a new phase, exhibitors are increasingly looking at better ways to directly engage with their customers. Regal Cinema, long an industry leader, seems to have found a particularly interesting one. Concourse Media principals James Andrew Felts and Matthew Shreder announced today a deal with Regal Entertainment Group to distribute Moviebill, an interactive new product that has been crafted to enhance and extend the 21st century movie going experience. The inaugural edition will be announced later this year for a 2018 launch.
Evans & Sutherland has introduced AEOS Theaters, an alliance between E&S, Spitz, and Sonics2. The companies have joined forces to create a new generation of giant screen cinema experiences for immersive domes and giant flat screen theaters. Using a blended array of laser or lamp-based projectors, the companies say that AEOS allows domes or flat screen theaters to achieve resolutions of 8K or even higher while maintaining their fulldome, partial dome, or 4:3 aspect ratio flat screens. An AEOS theater can also function as a multipurpose venue with available turnkey presentation and digital marketing packages.
National CineMedia has completed its acquisition of Fantasy Movie League, the box office predictions game that combines the fierce competition of fantasy sports with the insanely popular world of entertainment and movies. It marks the company’s first acquisition as a key part of its new focus on consumer digital products for movie audiences.
