Following its critically praised premiere at the Berlin Film Festival, Cinedigm has acquired all U.S. distribution rights to Anton Corbijn’s Life, starring Dane DeHaan (Life After Beth; Kill Your Darlings; Place Beyond The Pines), Robert Pattinson (Twilight,Cosmopolis, Maps To The Stars), and Ben Kingsley (Gandhi, Sexy Beast, Schindler’s List).

Joseph Magee Supervised Pitch Perfect 2 Mix

On May 15, Pitch Perfect 2 starring Anna Kendrick opened in theaters nationwide grossing more than $100 million in just two weeks. At the heart of the film’s success is its musical score. Supervising music mixer Joseph Magee, whose credits include the original Pitch Perfect, Saving Mr. Banks, High Fidelity and Into the Wild, recorded and mixed all of the a capella vocal performances using Harman’s JBL M2 Master Reference Monitors in a specially-built studio on location in Baton Rouge.

Technology Focus of May Editors’ Lounge

The Editors’ Lounge hosted their May event where production and post-production professionals were given the opportunity to get an up close look at the latest time-saving tools from RE: Vision Effects and Venera Technologies. Editor Brady Betzel also led a discussion with an emphasis on how learning new toolsets can put film & television editors careers on the fast track. Four lucky attendees walked away with raffle prizes from Venera Technologies and a complete set of plug-ins from RE: Vision Effects at the end of the evening.

Dogs have been considered man’s best friend for centuries, but these days it might be more accurate to consider dogs man’s best baby. This sometimes strange phenomenon inspired filmmakers Kasi Brown and Brandon Walter to produce Gone Doggy Gone, a film with a comedic twist that follows a couple stuck in a lackluster marriage who treat their dog like a baby until it gets kidnapped.

Sony Completes 4K Restoration of 1776

1776, Columbia Pictures’ exuberant 1972 film adaptation of the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical is now available on Blu-ray, from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, in the form of a spectacular 4K digital restoration. Hunt and Sony Pictures Entertainment executive vice president of asset management, film restoration & digital mastering Grover Crisp, the new director’s cut restores the film to its original visual splendor and includes newly-discovered material, never before seen by the public.

FuseFX Works Witchcraft on WGN America’s Salem

Burbank-headquartered FuseFX has been providing visual effects for Salem since the drama about witches in colonial Massachusetts made its debut last year as WGN America’s first original series. Currently in the midst of the show’s 13-episode second season, the studio’s team of artists is hard at work, helping to conjure a 17th century world riven with black magic, intrigue and strife. The series is produced by Fox 21 Television Studios.

ECA to Host Two Events at CineEurope June 22-25 in Barcelona

The Event Cinema Association this year will host two events at CineEurope June 22-25 in Barcelona. The CineEurope Focus Sessions – a panel discussion on the trade show floor on Tuesday June 23 at 4:00 pm – will feature some high profile, first time speakers: Emma Keith of NT Live, John Bullen of Sony Europe, Duncan Connal of Vue Cinemas, John Lewis of Broadway Cinema Letchworth, and Grant Calton of Fathom Events. This will be followed the next day by a poolside reception.

Universal Pictures to Restore Fifteen Silent Classics

Building on its 2012 Centennial celebration, Universal Pictures has announced its continued commitment to honor the studio's rich film history and cultural legacy by restoring some of the world's most classic silent films. During the next four years, the studio will restore approximately 15 silent film titles from Universal's early years. The complete list of films is still in development in collaboration with outside film historians, institutions, and preservationists.

Kung Fury Making Online Debut

Following a successful Cannes Film Festival premiere, David Sandberg's ‘80s-inspired film Kung Fury makes its online debut this week. Kickstarter-funded by 17,000 backers, the 30-minute film follows a Miami-based kung fu cop as he time travels from the ‘80s to the ‘40s on a mission to take out Adolf Hitler, a plotline augmented by 399 over-the-top VFX shots delivered by a 46-person crew at Scandinavian VFX house Fido.
