Universal, Film Foundation Restore Brando's One-Eyed Jacks

Universal Pictures and The Film Foundation celebrated the Cannes Film Festival with the world premiere screening of the newly restored 1961 film, One-Eyed Jacks, starring and directed by Marlon Brando. Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese, who had long advocated for the film's restoration, closely supervised the work to ensure the restoration honored Brando's original artistic vision. One-Eyed Jacks was digitally scanned in 6K and restored in 4K from the original 35mm VistaVision negative.

The Laser Guy

Laser protection was one of the big stories of last month’s CinemaCon convention. All four projector manufacturers featured laser technology in their exhibits and all four announced significant sales. Many people can claim some measure of credit for laser projection’s success in digital cinema but none more than Bill Beck. His advocacy for the technology, which goes back more than a decade, has justifiably earned him the title The Laser Guy.

Technicolor Masters Captain America

Following on the heels of their 2014 hit, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, directors Anthony and Joe Russo have done it again with the Marvel-Disney franchise blockbuster Captain America: Civil War. From a script written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, which blends dramatic spectacle with legit emotion and humor, the filmmakers once again turned to cinematographer Trent Opaloch, who shot The Winter Soldier. The Technicolor color finishing team led by senior supervising finishing colorist Steve Scott, worked with Opaloch, the Marvel team (producer Kevin Feige, and executive producer Victoria Alonso), and the Russos to provide final color-grading, digital intermediate services, mastering for a wide array of HDR theatrical deliverables, and HDR home masters.

SMPTE New England Hosts Boot Camp

The New England Section of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers will offer a free day-long New Technologies Boot Camp dedicated to fostering a better understanding of working with high resolution (UHD, 4K, and beyond), high-dynamic-range imaging, and higher frame rates; maintaining resolution independence on screens of every size; and leveraging internet protocol and ATSC 3.0 for more efficient movement of this media content. The boot camp will run from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on May 19 in the Terrace Room of the Holiday Inn in Dedham, Massachusetts.

Deluxe, Unique Create Distribution Alliance

Deluxe Technicolor Digital Cinema and Unique Digital today announced the creation of a distribution alliance to provide an innovative online Digital Cinema Package delivery solution based on Unique’s Movie Transit network, the first network to offer distribution of theatrical feature films via landline broadband.
