Award-winning sound pros Rick Ash and Ron Eng have joined the sound team at Periscope Post & Audio, Hollywood. Ash and Eng will be the lead sound talent at Periscope Post & Audio’s Hollywood facility, which launched last month. The sound department features a theatrical mix stage with an Avid S6 digital console, Pro Tools and Dolby Atmos capability, as well as three additional mix stages also featuring Avid S6 consoles, Pro Tools and Dolby Atmos.
Now preparing for its 11th edition, the DTLA Film Festival, downtown Los Angeles’ largest film-TV event, has announced a call for entries for 360º/VR/MR films for a new sidebar of immersive content, running concurrent with the rest of the festival, October 23-27. Submissions for all genres of immersive films are now open through August 16 and are free to all filmmakers. Films can be submitted through the festival's Film Freeway account.
Yesterday, the new British musical comedy directed by Danny Boyle, which was released last month following its debut at the Tribeca Film Festival, used as many as twelve cameras for some scenes. This presented some serious workflow challenges. To address them, cinematographer Christopher Ross BSC, who had previously worked with Boyle on the TV series Trust was joined by Mission digital imaging technician Thomas Patrick who had worked with him for the first time on Trust in 2017.
Jordan Levy, veteran commercial director of photography, shot FCA U.S.’s new The Summer of Jeep campaign starring Jeremy Renner, with Cooke Anamorphic/i lenses. The campaign was directed by Levy’s friend and long-time collaborator Jeff Tomsic, with whom he has worked for a decade. It began airing in the States on July 10.

The software tool provides a simple way to ensure that HDR metadata is properly aligned with associated HDR video. It saves time and eliminates errors in preparing feature film and television content for delivery in formats including Dolby Vision HDR.
Well-known French digital imaging technician and film workflow specialist, Matthieu Straub, has joined FilmLight. Based in Paris, he will provide technical advice and practical assistance to FilmLight clients in France and Benelux, as well as acting as the company’s voice in local key trade groups and with training partners in the production and post marketplaces.
DPA’s 6066 Subminiature Headset Microphone was a winner in the Product Design category at the Red Dot Awards, which were held this week at the Aalto-Theatre in Essen, Germany. DPA Microphones’ project lead Rune Møller and research and development manager Ole Moesmann accepted the award for the company.
The Hollywood Professional Association Awards Committee has announced the winners of the 2019 HPA Engineering Excellence Award. Honors will be bestowed on November 21 at the 14th annual HPA Awards gala at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles.
