The Motion Picture Sound Editors association has announced nominees for the 66th Annual MPSE Golden Reel Awards. Nominees represent the work of the world’s most talented sound artists and their contributions to the past year’s most outstanding feature film, television, animation and computer entertainment productions.
The New York facility of Eurofins Digital Media Services has been granted a Certification in Dolby Vision Quality Control Services. Eurofins is the first dedicated Dolby Vision quality assurance facility on the East Coast, meeting the growing demand for quality control and testing services in New York City.
In November, the Digital Cinema Initiative posted two new draft documents towards a high dynamic range specification for cinema titled Direct View Display D-Cinema Addendum and High Dynamic Range D-Cinema Addendum. They represent a major improvement over DCI’s previous draft, which I wrote about last September [DCI Has Lost Its Way https://bit.ly/2Omcnoa]. In contrast, the new documents are well written, detailed, explanatory and responsive. But questions remain and cost matters, leaving plenty of room for improvement.
Los Angeles post house Inventure Studios has renovated its Studio C with the installation of a Severtson projection screen. Now all four of its studios are equipped with a Severtson woven acoustically-transparent screen. Seveterson dealer Keith Watanabe supervised the installation.

The American Society of Cinematographers celebrates its 100th anniversary today and to mark the occasion, the society released their members’ list of 100 Milestone Films in the art and craft of cinematography of the 20th century. The list is the first of its kind to showcase the best of cinematography as selected by professional cinematographers. The list culminates in a Top 10, with the other 90 titles unranked. The International Broadcasting Convention is now accepting submissions of technical papers for its annual conference, which is being held this September in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Following an increase in female speakers at the conference in 2018, up from 14 percent in 2017 to 37 percent, IBC is encouraging applications from a globally diverse audience.
On the heels of its already record-breaking release, and in response to popular demand, a third Fathom Events date has been added for Warner Bros. Pictures’ much-heralded WWI documentary They Shall Not Grow Old, from Oscar-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson. The film will be screened at more than 1,000 locations in the U.S. and Canada on Monday, January 21, taking advantage of the long Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday weekend.
Twenty years ago, Sound Lounge was born out of a desire to create something that did not exist in the audio post-production community. Tom Jucarone, Peter Holcomb and Marshall Grupp imagined an artist-owned studio that put a premium on excellence in everything related to sound, but with a laid-back, friendly vibe. It would be a studio packed to the rafters with state-of-the-art gear, a place where they could work at a high level and nurture the next generation of sound talent, but also a “home” where they wouldn’t mind hanging out after the work was finished.
