Columbia Pictures’ The Amazing Spider Man 2 marks a groundbreaking collaboration between visual effects, sound and post-production teams from Sony Pictures Entertainment. The Academy Award-winning Sony Pictures Imageworks crafted over 1000 visual effects shots, Sony Pictures Post Production provided sound – its first project in in Dolby Atmos – and Colorworks performed film scanning, conforming and color grading all in 4K.
Christie has announced that Grupo Cinemex, the sixth largest cinema chain worldwide, is installing Christie Vive Audio surround sound systems in their current CinemeXtremo auditoriums powered by Dolby Atmos sound technology. Dolby Atmos unleashes the full potential of sound by allowing filmmakers to easily place or move sounds anywhere in the movie theater with object-based audio to create a lifelike, virtual reality audio landscape. With these installations, Cinemex becomes the chain with the largest number of premium auditoriums in Latin America to feature the unrivaled combination of Dolby Atmos and Christie Vive Audio.
Next month when The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opens in theatres around the world it may well turn out to be a watershed event in the industry. That is because it will be the latest movie to be widely released in both the Barco Auro 11.1 and Dolby Atmos sound formats. As the budgets for large-scale movies continue to grow, the pressure to open on as many screens as possible increases and Sony Pictures Entertainment clearly wanted this film on every screen it could get.
Located in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, Mönchengladbach has a history that goes back to the 10th century—but the city’s newly completed movie theater features the latest digital cinema technology. This is particularly true where the sound is concerned. Haus Zoar is Germany’s first cinema to feature a Dolby Atmos Connect interface with Harman’s Crown DCi Series network amplifiers. The cinema has also deployed JBL ScreenArray loudspeakers in an installation that takes surround sound realism to new heights – literally.
Spidey has decided to call a truce in the cinema sound format war. Sony Pictures Entertainment is teaming with Dolby and Barco to mix The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in both Auro 11.1 and Dolby Atmos cinema sound. The movie will be released in theaters internationally beginning April 16 and domestically on May 2. The move will no doubt increase the number of movie theatres available to show the movie.
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug was brought to life at Park Road Post Production, New Zealand, where the production team mastered both high frame rate stereoscopic 3D at 48 frames per second and immersive Dolby Atmos sound, and integrated it all into the digital cinema package process.
The main tool they used for the task was the DVS Clipster, which allows for the world’s first implemented high frame rate DCI workflow with Dolby Atmos.
Dolby Laboratories and Cinema 21, the largest cinema chain in Indonesia, announced today that it is the first in Indonesia to install the Dolby Atmos sound platform. Upcoming Twentieth Century Fox films including The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Rio 2, X-Men: Days of Future Past, and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes will be mixed and released in Dolby Atmos digital cinema sound.
