Veritek to Support Sony 4K Projection Systems for Vue Cinemas

Sony Digital Cinema has announced that it will provide 4K projection systems to the Vue Cinemas chain for their whole network of screens. In related news Veritek has started a ten-year service agreement with Sony Europe to deliver service support to exhibitors across Europe.  As part of the overall agreement Sony then sought out an appropriate and qualified third party support company: Veritek will deliver field engineering support for the ongoing maintenance of the Vue systems once they are installed. AAM Acquires Controlling Interest in Nordic Digital Alliance,2011-09-14,Arts Alliance Media has announced that it has acquired a controlling interest in Nordic Digital Alliance the joint venture established by AAM and a consortium of Norwegian businesses to roll out digital cinema in Norway and develop cinema advertising. AAM had been the largest shareholder in the company which has installed 76 digital cinema screens in Norway and developed Cadien the market leading campaign management software for the cinema advertising business. AAM will use the acquisition as a launch pad for further Nordic expansion of the business following the recent announcement of a VPF deal with Finnkino. AAM’s existing software offering – consisting of a Theatre Management System and back-office reporting solution – will be enhanced by NDA’s expertise in the advertising market. Bodyguard Released in Dolby Surround 7.1
 ,2011-09-14, The film Bodyguard starring Salman Khan was released in Dolby Surround 7.1 on August 31 in select cinemas across India. “Sound is integral to experiencing Bodyguard ” says Jitendra Chaudhary sound designer for Bodyguard. “Dolby Surround 7.1 gave us greater control over the definition and placement of sounds to achieve the exact vision we dreamed of.”
 
 Bodyguard is directed by Siddique and produced by Atul Agnihotri Alvira Agnihotri and Nikhil Namit. The film stars Salman Khan Raj Babbar and Kareena Kapoor and it features music by Himesh Reshammiya and Pritam Chakraborty. 

Bodyguard is the second Bollywood film to be released in Dolby Surround 7.1 following Ramesh Sippy Entertainment’s Dum Maaro Dum a few months ago.

Cineworks Opens Satellite Operation in Baton Rouge,2011-09-14, Louisiana-based Cineworks has opened a satellite operation at Celtic Media Centre to support film production at the Baton Rouge sound stage facility and around the capitol region. When fully staffed the new location will employ four to six people full-time new jobs added to the company’s roster of 15 experienced technical experts. The new operation consists of digital dailies suites with fiber upload capabilities able to work with most of the digital cameras and workflows currently on the market and provides Baton Rouge area productions faster access to Cineworks personnel and capabilities.

DreamWorks Animation Selects Mari to Enhance In-House Pipeline ,2011-09-14, DreamWorks Animation SKG has purchased a Mari site license from The Foundry to enhance its in-house pipeline. The studio has already begun utilizing Mari on upcoming productions. 

Mari allows artists to concentrate on painting detailed multi-layered textures directly onto 3D models in a fluid and natural way. Mari was originally conceived because no existing commercial product could handle the complex highly detailed development work required for 3D painting.

GDC Signs New Order with Jinyi Zhujiang Movie Circuit,2011-09-14,GDC Technology has signed a major contract with the Jinyi Zhujiang Movie Circuit. The contract is a repeat order which involves the deployment of a total of 200 GDC SX-2000A Digital Cinema Servers with Integrated Media Block. Full deployment is scheduled for completion by 2013.   Jinyi operates nearly 50 wholly owned theatres namely Jinyi International Cinemas in more than 30 cities including Guangzhou Beijing Shanghai and Shenzhen among others with more than 300 screens. HFF Film Academy in Munich Opens New Facilities,2011-09-14, The Munich-based HFF Academy for Television and Film (Hochschule für Fernsehen und Film) is one of the world’s most highly reputed film academies. Many well-known filmmakers including Bernd Eichinger Roland Emmerich and Academy Award winner Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck learned their trade there. Now the HFF is about to receive spacious new facilities in central Munich. The governor of Bavaria will personally inaugurate them on September 15.

 The modern new building with 99 000 square feet of floor space features post-production facilities seminar rooms and four auditoriums. Kinoton which was awarded the HFF contract following a Europe-wide tendering process has installed premium digital cinema video and film equipment in all four cinemas. 

Professor Peter C. Slansky the head of HFF's technology department is very happy with the results. We expect our students’ filmmaking efforts to meet very high standards ” he says “and we need top-quality projection capabilities to evaluate them.  The new HFF has two cinemas (called 1 and 2) a large Audimax hall and a video auditorium. The two cinemas and the Audimax hall now have projectors manufactured by Kinoton and based on projection technology provided by Barco. Doremi servers and both Blu-ray and XDCam HD players supplemented by Digital Betacam players in cinemas 1 and 2 handle a wide variety of formats. DVI switches and DMS DC2 PRO Digital Media Scalers distribute different kinds of video signals. In addition Kinoton has equipped two of the auditoriums with pairs of reference studio projectors featuring digitally controlled intermittent drives as well as makeup and rewind tables. Kinoton’s service technicians have also integrated two FP 30 D 35-mm projectors and two of HFF’s older 16-mm projectors into the projection booths. In the video cinema Kinoton has installed a high-quality video projector and a special server for storage and playback of nonstandard content supplemented by various content sources including a Blu-ray player and an XDCam HD player. 

The entire projection concept is prepared for networking within the scope of a theatre management system that will make it possible to centrally feed content in from virtually any kind of source and then route it to the HFF’s individual auditoriums for multifunctional use. ,2723
HPA Names Engineering Excellence Award Winners,2011-09-14,The Hollywood Post Alliance has announced the recipients of the organization’s Engineering Excellence Award.  The coveted honor sponsored by NAB Show is intended to showcase and reward inventors manufacturers vendors and/or peer post-production companies for their outstanding product or technology application offerings. The Engineering Excellence Award is a central part of the HPA Awards which have become the standard by which creative and technical excellence in the art science and craft of post-production is measured.   To enter the Engineering competition companies had to submit a written description followed by a presentation to an expert panel of judges. The Engineering Award presentations and blue-ribbon judging session were held earlier this month at LaserPacific. This lively session played host to some of the most significant new technologies currently on the market. Entries of either a product or process had to represent a significant step forward for post-production industry beneficiaries and could be submitted by an individual group or company. The monitor delivers true blacks with exceptional dark detail high contrast wide dynamic range and precise color rendering. IBM Linear Tape File System The IBM Linear Tape File System was invented by IBM Research to provide a simple cost efficient way to access and manage massive archives of data and digital assets. Lightcraft Previzion A real time visual effects system that incorporates a combination of high precision camera tracking sophisticated rendering and VFX quality keying which makes it ideal for the real time on-set compositing of live action virtual backgrounds and CGI characters. The system provides filmmakers with the ability to create visual effects shots with dynamic camera moves and actually see the completed effects during the shot. Sony OLED Monitor The organic light emitting diode technology for reference monitoring is a panel and processor system that is practical for media production applications.
