Autodesk Signs Exclusive Deal for Disney’s XGen Technology,2011-08-31, Autodesk has obtained a license from Walt Disney Pictures with a five-year exclusivity period for the XGen Arbitrary Primitive Generator technology which was used most recently by Walt Disney Animation Studios in the hit animated film Tangled.

XGen technology was first presented by WDAS in a research paper at SIGGRAPH in 2003 for the creation of computer-generated fur feathers and foliage. Since that time XGen has evolved and been refined on seven features three shorts and one TV show. It has been used to create the fur hair feathers trees leaves and rocks in Bolt the trees and bushes in Up the dust bunnies debris trees bushes clover and flowers in Toy Story 3 and the grass and trees in Cars 2. In Tangled WDAS used XGen to bring the lavish 3D animated world to life: from Rapunzel’s perfectly groomed golden locks to the film’s lush vegetation-filled landscapes including bushes flowers vines grass weeds moss thistle ground mulch fallen leaves sticks rocks butterfly fur airborne dust leaves and trees plus props such as roof tiles arrow fletchings a broom and paint brushes. Senior development software engineer at WDAS Tom Thompson was an initial creator and remains the chief architect of the software. Walt Disney Pictures‚ agreement with Autodesk will enable Autodesk to make this technology available to artists to create digital entertainment. “Twenty years ago visual effects artists creating computer graphics were mostly mathematicians and scientists using highly technical and complex software tools that required significant amounts of custom programming ” says chief technology officer Andy Hendrickson Walt Disney Animation Studios. “Back then off-the-shelf software could not create the required details of nuance and emotion. Today we were able to create XGen as an effective artistic tool because Autodesk provides studios like ours with comprehensive tools and a flexible extensible platform to develop on. The Autodesk customizable toolset helps visual effects artists do their best work.” A key challenge in the visual effects industry continues to be the need to constantly evolve creatively while somehow controlling rapidly escalating production costs says Autodesk’s Marc Petit. “To help customers better address this challenge Autodesk has been working with industry leaders like Walt Disney Animation Studios to help them innovate faster and to make these new technologies more broadly accessible. Digital Entertainment Creation users are sure to benefit from developments designed by industry visionaries and proven in production.”

Walt Disney Animation Studios director of studio technology Dan Candela says “A primary focus for my team is to ensure that the production pipeline is streamlined in order to efficiently produce the best possible CG animation. With Autodesk’s Maya as a core piece of our toolset we've developed over 100 plug-ins and extensions for the platform to enable our artists to create a movie of the quality of Tangled within necessary time and budgetary limits. Sharing our technology with the VFX and CG animation community raises the creative bar for the entire industry.” Autodesk www.autodesk.com ,2664

Schneer as its director of motion pictures. Schneer’s responsibilities which became effective August 1 will include overseeing the approval of all domestic motion picture projects presented to CC Mercosur for film finance funding.   “We are extremely pleased to have Mr. Schneer join our board of directors in the division of motion pictures and look forward to his strong leadership in advancing Mercosur’s activities in the entertainment industry across both South American and the U.S. markets ” says Mercosur’s U.S. consul general Felix J. Mostelac.

“In looking to expand our multinational financial services to the film industry within the United States we could not have selected a more suitable individual for the position ” says Mostelac. “Mr. Schneer holds an MBA and a Juris Doctorate and comes from a long family background in the motion picture business reaching back to a great uncle Abe Schneider the former president of Columbia Pictures; as well as his father’s brother the world beloved fantasy film producer Charles Schneer known for such classic films as Jason and the Argonauts Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger The Golden Voyage of Sinbad The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad Clash of the Titans 1981 Earth vs Flying Saucer among many others.”

Anyways it’s a very exciting film project and we hope to lend our services to it in some capacity.”

Schneer says “I am truly honored by the designation from the consul general as well as humbled that such an esteemed international organization would deem me a worthy candidate for the position.  I can state with confidence we will do great things together.”

As for the types of motion picture projects CC Mercosur would be looking to accept and/or finance Schneer says “We are really open at this time but I would say the main qualifier is that the film’s budget is in realistic proportion to the expected box office return and its waterfall distribution back to investors and as you might expect I have a personal favoritism for epic fantasy films.” ,2666

Captain America Action Footage Shot with Canon DSLRs,2011-08-31,Canon has announced that the highly anticipated feature film Captain America: The First Avenger used Canon EOS 5D Mark II Digital SLR cameras to capture many of the movie’s action shots.  Throughout the super hero action picture the 5D Mark II was used to shoot motion sequences that were seamlessly integrated with the production’s 35mm film footage. According to Jonathan Taylor second unit director/director of photography on the film the 5D Mark II was an excellent choice for the capture of dramatic POV action shots. “The challenge with a lot of action photography is getting the camera in the right position ” Taylor says. “I’m always looking to get the camera into impossible to reach places because those kinds of shots make action sequences much more exciting. Most 35mm motion-picture cameras and even the leading digital cinematography cameras are just too big to get into interesting positions.” Action scenes in Captain America: The First Avenger in which Taylor used 5D Mark II cameras for POV shots include a car chase and crash and a high-speed motorcycle pursuit. The small size of the camera enabled Taylor to mount it on the interiors and exteriors of moving vehicles to capture dramatic action shots. The camera’s size also ensured that it was “invisible” to the film cameras shooting the same scene from a distance. “The thing with action is that the more angles you can shoot the faster the cuts you can use and the more energy you get into a sequence ” Taylor says. Cinerama Film Festival Announced,2011-08-31,Film buffs will be treated to 15 classic widescreen movies during the Cinerama Film Festival including extremely rare 70mm prints from studio vaults and the archives of The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.   The festival opens September 30 at Seattle Cinerama Theatre and runs through October 16. Opening weekend will feature two of only seven movies ever produced for Cinerama's three-projector technology This is Cinerama and How The West Was Won. The other movies featured will be widescreen classics in 70mm including West Side Story Lawrence of Arabia and Cleopatra. The 70mm prints Cinerama goers will enjoy are on loan from Hollywood studios' vaults and rarely seen by general audiences said theater operator Greg Wood. Prints will be loaned by The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences 20th Century Fox Warner Brothers Disney & MGM. The festival is sponsored by Seattle Cinerama Theatre and the Seattle International Film Festival. Cinerama Theatre is owned by Paul G. Allen the Seattle philanthropist and co-founder of Microsoft. He saved the vintage 1963 movie theater from demolition in 1988. Last year he gave the theater a multi-million dollar upgrade with digital sounds 3D capabilities a new screen movie memorabilia from his personal collection and the best selection of locally-made concessions at any theater in Seattle. Along with the capability to show the latest blockbusters in 3D Allen frequently donates use of Cinerama to non-profit film festivals including the Seattle International Film Festival Seattle Lesbian & Gay Film Festival National Film Festival for Talented Youth (NFFTY) and the Seattle Jewish Film Festival. Cinerama has been one of Seattle's great treasures and Paul Allen has made it one of the best movie palaces in the world says Carl Spence SIFF's artistic director. As much as digital cinema is transforming the movie going experience it still has not achieved the rich look and dimension of celluloid particularly compared to what you'll see with the widescreen and luminous 70mm film featured at the Cinerama Festival. Allen said the Cinerama Festival is possible because of the generosity and cooperation of The Academy and the film studios. We're grateful to the Academy and studios for sharing these treasures with us and allowing Cinerama's audiences to see them the way they were intended – on the wide screen says Allen who saved Cinerama in 1988. The films will be projected by state-of-the-art equipment and seen on the theater's original Cinerama screen – the largest in the world. Last fall we embraced the future with a large technical upgrade. We're now excited to embrace the past with a special series dedicated to 70mm film Wood says. Cinerama came to popularity in the early 1960s shot with three 35mm motion picture cameras mounted as one unit sharing one motor. Three separate projectors running simultaneously merged the film into one movie shown on a giant deeply curved screen. 3-Strip Cinerama films:

Attenborough to Receive IBC 2011 International Honor for Excellence,2011-08-31,The winner of the IBC 2011 International Honor for Excellence is Sir David Attenborough in recognition of his remarkable career in television and in particular natural history. His career spans almost 60 years and includes his latest work the Atlantic Productions documentary Flying Monsters 3D with Sir David Attenborough one of the most acclaimed programs commissioned by Sky 3D. The International Honor for Excellence is the highest award which IBC bestows. It is presented to individuals and organizations which have taken the best technology available – and driven technology forward – to create the finest broadcasting content. Attenborough joined the BBC in 1952 and immediately found his vocation in natural history programming. He made his name in front of the camera as well as producing with the Zoo Quest expeditions in which he and a small crew set off with a 16mm camera to a remote corner of the globe intending to return with a rare animal for London Zoo and sufficient footage to create a television series. In the mid 1960s he temporarily pulled back from making programs when he was appointed the controller of the newly launched channel BBC2. Among the programs he commissioned was Monty Python's Flying Circus – about as far from natural history as it is possible to imagine. But the natural world was too big a draw and he returned to finding new ways of presenting its wonders on television. The 1979 landmark series Life on Earth and its sequence with mountain gorillas became one of the most watched programs of all time. Sir David Attenborough has been called 'the greatest broadcaster of our time' and throughout his career he has seized upon the latest developments in technology to illuminate natural history says Peter Owen chairman of the IBC Council. Working with the BBC Natural History Unit he pioneered time-lapse sequences in The Private Life of Plants and low-light and infrared cameras to capture the behavior of nocturnal mammals. Today he is working with Atlantic Productions on stunning 3D programs including Flying Monsters the first 3D program to win a BAFTA Award. Attenborough says I am greatly honored to receive this award from IBC. Throughout my career I have used the best technology available. When I started this was 16mm film which gave us lightweight cameras to take into the wild. Since then my journey has taken me from black and white to color and from film to digital high definition and today I am excited to be involved in 3D production which really immerses the viewer in the scene.” I have worked with the best people in the business including the BBC Natural History Unit and now Atlantic Productions and some extraordinarily patient and skilled cameramen and directors. Making wildlife television – whether it was Zoo Quest in the 1950s or Flying Monsters today – is hugely collaborative. I know that IBC encourages and develops collaborations between program makers and technologists which makes this award particularly special. Thank you IBC. The IBC Awards Ceremony which will include a special tribute to Attenborough and a look at the latest stereoscopic 3D wildlife programs presented by Atlantic Productions is on September 11. All visitors are invited to attend the ceremony in the RAI Auditorium. IBC www.ibc.org
