Barco has announced that its Integrated Cinema Media Processor has achieved full Digital Cinema Initiative compliance. This module, which combines the functionalities of an integrated cinema processor and media server into a single board, is at the heart of the new Barco Alchemy digital cinema projector range. It is also fully compatible with all Barco Series 2 digital cinema projectors already in the field.

“The Barco Alchemy module is unique in the digital cinema world in that it blends the cinema processing electronics with the DCI media decoding part of a media server,” said Theodore Marescaux, product manager at Barco. “Achieving DCI compliance for this new module is a key milestone in the project. In fact, we are the first to achieve the DCI proposed frame rates for 4K 2D at 48 and 60 frames per second. By exceeding the recommended bit rates and with 4K 60fps projectors at 625Mbps, we are primed to enchant moviegoers with an even more breathtaking immersive experience than ever before.”

The new Barco Alchemy module integrates JPEG2000 decoding and crypto engines from Barco Silex, a Barco subsidiary.

“Our design excellence and broad IP portfolio were a perfect match for this exciting project,” said Thierry Watteyne, CEO Barco Silex SA. “Our JPEG2000 decoder and cryptographic AES and HMAC cores are key elements in the design – and our team has strained every nerve to integrate and optimize the cores to meet the demanding specifications of the Barco Alchemy module.”

“Rigorous compliance with DCI specifications and NIST standards is critical for the digital cinema industry to continue captivating moviegoers,” said Travis Spann, president and laboratory director of Aegisolve, the NIST-accredited and DCI-licensed laboratory that conducted the compliance tests. “We gladly report that both DCI CTP and FIPS 140-2 reviews and testing of the Barco Integrated Cinema Media Processor are complete and compliant with all applicable requirements,” Marescaux said. “The combined expertise of a FIPS lab and DCI CTP testing is a cast-iron guarantee that the Barco Alchemy module meets the most stringent DCI requirements. This is a milestone for the module and for our entire digital cinema offering.”
