B&B Theatres has signed an agreement to install DTS:X immersive audio powered by GDC servers at six locations this year and six in 2018, with the remaining locations to be rolled out in late 2018/early 2019. As a licensee of the DTS:X object-based immersive sound technology for the development of GDC immersive sound media servers, GDC will be leading the effort. With this agreement, B&B Theatres will become the largest U.S. movie theatre circuit to exhibit content released with a DTS:X soundtrack.
IBC will award its highest accolade, the International Honor for Excellence, to Dolby Laboratories. In IBC’s 50th anniversary year, the award reflects on more than 50 years of continual improvement in sound from Dolby, which culminated with the 2012 release of Brave in Dolby Atmos.
While large multiplex cinema chains compete on quantity, smaller independent venues are finding a new market by specializing in quality. For the third year in a row, QSC Cinema has been honored with the prestigious Teddy Award, an annual award voted by dealer members of the International Cinema Technology Association. The award recognizes the ICTA Manufacturer that best exemplifies the progressive principles of product development, and provides the dealers with service and up-to-date technical and sales information, while supporting the status of their product without qualification. The Teddy Award was presented to QSC at the recent annual ICTA Convention in Berlin, Germany.
Located in Benxi, in China’s Liaoning Province, Xinshidai MZC Cinema recently opened a 700-seat cineplex that consists of five halls, including a Dolby Atmos certified flagship auditorium with Christie Vive Audio in Hall 2, as well as a specially configured VIP auditorium that offers a premium movie-going experience. This is the first cinema complex in China’s northeastern region to be equipped with Christie cinema audio.
Bow Tie Cinemas has announced that renovations will begin after Labor Day to upgrade the Marquis 16 and Bow Tie Extreme in Trumbull, Connecticut into a Bow Tie Ultimate theater. Ultimate renovations at the Marquis will include reserved luxury recliner seating in all auditoriums, as well as the installation of Dolby Atmos premium audio presentation in their already established BTX large format experience. In addition, there will be an elevated concession program which includes expanded food and bar menu offerings.
Guitammer Company has installed its ButtKicker cinema system in two auditoriums totaling 310 seats in the newly remodeled MCL Cinemas at Telford Plaza in Hong Kong
The Hollywood Section of SMPTE will host a demonstration of classic movie sound technology at its monthly meeting Tuesday, July 25, in Hollywood. The event will include a live performance by Joe Rinaudo, founder of the Silent Cinema Society, on an American Fotoplayer (provided by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences). The Fotoplayer is a type of player piano used in movie theaters during the silent era to provide sound effects and music.
At CineEurope 2017 GDC Technology is showcasing its full line of integrated media block technology including the SR-1000, the SX-4000, and SX-3000. The company will also highlight an advanced storage system.
Horizon Cinema plans to open a new Dolby Atmos multiplex in Russia. Based in Rostov-on-Don, the 13-screen multiplex is set to open by the end of 2017 and will be the biggest Dolby Atmos multiplex in Russia.
