In a reverse twist on the silent movies of old, The Companions: A Lost Screenplay is a film without moving images. Or, as described in accompanying notes from the de Young Museum in San Francisco, the sound installation becomes “a type of auditory cinema that explores the vital role sound plays in shaping narrative and affective space in film.” The 20-minute work, presented in the de Young’s iconic observation floor (one of the free spaces within the museum), couples sweeping 360-degree views of the city to a soundtrack of music and sound effects as reproduced through a 24-channel system of Meyer Sound loudspeakers.

Performing Foley Live

Award-winning Foley artist Leslie Bloome is performing his distinctive craft live as part of special Halloween screenings of The Unsilent Picture at Philipsburg Manor in Sleepy Hollow, New York. Bloome is using an assortment of props and tools to create live sound effects to accompany the spooky black and white film, based on a Washington Irving short story. Directed by Alex Harvey and starring Tony Award-winning actor Bill Irwin, The Unsilent Picture, which also features live musical accompaniment, screens through October 31.

QSC Sponsors Vancouver International Film Festival

QSC sponsored the 2018 Vancouver International Film Festival which spanned sixteen days and ends today. QSC equipment was utilized in all seven venues, including the hearing assistance equipment in The Centre for the Performing Arts, the location of the opening and closing gala screenings. The project was particularly challenging because The Centre Theatre was not designed as a cinema. There are three seating levels in the 1800-seat theatre, and all of the equipment needed to be installed within two days.

Dolby Surpasses 4,000 Milestone Atmos Screens Worldwide

Dolby Laboratories today announced that there are now more than 4,000 Dolby Atmos screens installed worldwide. Dolby Atmos momentum continues to grow globally with screens installed in more than 90 countries. More than 150 mixing facilities and more than 1,000 feature films are released, or have been announced to be released, with support from all major Hollywood studios as well as content creators around the world, including Asia Pacific, North America and Latin America.

CinemaNext Upgrades France’s National Center of Cinematography and Moving Image

Éclair, Samsung Partner to Bring Onyx Cinema LED Technology to European Filmmakers

Dolby's surround sound technology Atmos is one of the most sought-after features in the cinema market, and is often integrated into a larger premium concept.
