Rohde & Schwarz Announces Reorganization

In November 2014, the Rohde & Schwarz Broadcasting Division was renamed Broadcast and Media Division. This emphasized the company’s growing commitment in the studio market as well as the expansion of its product portfolio across the entire value added chain. What the company calls the next logical step is now taking place with the complete integration of the Rohde & Schwarz DVS GmbH subsidiary into the parent company. "We have had a common vision for a long time. Now we have merged perfectly to continue on our successful path," said Juergen Nies, head of the division.

NYC Campaign Promotes Diversity in Motion Picture Production

New York City Media and Entertainment Commissioner Julie Menin has announced #NominateNYC, a new initiative that will work towards bringing greater diversity to the film and entertainment industry. According to recent reports from the USC Institute for Diversity and Empowerment at Annenberg and UCLA’s Bunche Center for African American Studies, women directed only 4 percent of the top-grossing films of 2014, while people of color directed 13 percent. Women and people of color accounted for less than 10 percent of writers of the top 163 films of that year. People of color held 13 percent of lead roles in the 163 top films of 2014, and women 26 percent. Additionally, across 4,610 speaking characters in the 100 top grossing films of 2014, only 19 were lesbian, gay or bisexual, and zero were transgender.

Law in Film and TV Subject of July 20 Program

The depiction of the law in art and culture is as old as storytelling. Its manifestation in moving pictures often focuses on questions and concerns about the rule of law and equal citizenship in a well-functioning democracy. The Law Library of Congress and the Library’s Packard Campus for Audio Visual Conservation will offer a program highlighting the depiction of law in film and television July 20 at the Packard Campus Theater in Culpeper, Virginia. The event is free and open to the public, and no tickets are required.

Dolby, Lionsgate Bringing Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos Content to the Home

Dolby Laboratories and Lionsgate are partnering to release a slate of Lionsgate new release and catalog titles mastered in Dolby Vision and mixed in Dolby Atmos to offer a premium cinematic experience to the home entertainment market. As a result of this collaboration, consumers with Dolby Vision enabled televisions and Dolby Atmos enabled home theater products will be able to enjoy a broad spectrum of entertainment content from Lionsgate.

Art House Fans Also Like Mainstream Movies, Study Says

One million Australians 14 and older see art house or foreign language movies at the cinema—but they still go to mainstream movies too, Roy Morgan Research cinema attendance data shows. More than half (58 percent) of art house-foreign film-goers saw just one such film in an average three month period last year, while 30 percent saw two or three, and the remaining twelve percent saw four or more. Overall, at an average of two such films each per quarter, it adds up to a total of eight art house/foreign films over the year.
