Women Take Center Stage at Sundance

In partnership with AMC Networks, Women in Film LA and ReFrame, New York Women in Film & Television will hold a panel discussion January 24th in Park City, Utah, during the Sundance Film Festival. The topic is Women on the Front Lines: Changing the Game. Sundance Institute reports that 46 percent of directors competing in this year’s festival are women, up six percent from 2019. While there’s still further to go, these statistics show that progress is possible when concerted efforts are made to address systemic biases.

Goldcrest Post Supports Five Sundance Films

Goldcrest Post provided post-production services for five films making their world premieres in the 2020 Sundance Film Festival. Four of those films, The 40-Year-Old Version, Nine Days, Save Yourselves! and Shirley, have each been accepted in the festival’s prestigious U.S. Dramatic Competition. The Truffle Hunters is included in the World Cinema Documentary Competition. The festival runs January 23 to February 2 in Park City, Utah.

Jackson WWl Documentary Wins HPA Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation

The Hollywood Professional Association awards committee will honor Peter Jackson’s documentary film They Shall Not Grow Old with the organization’s Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation. The award, whose recipient is selected by a jury of industry luminaries, was conceived to recognize companies and individuals who have demonstrated excellence, whether in the development of workflow, process or project to support creative storytelling, or in technical innovation. The award will be bestowed on November 21 at the 14th annual HPA Awards gala at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles.

Abramorama Releasing Neil Young Documentary

Abramorama is partnering with Shakey Pictures and Reprise/Warner Records to release the latest Neil Young film Mountaintop across North America on October 22 and in Europe and South American on November 18. Two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Neil Young continues his 50-year odyssey with Crazy Horse, this time in the mountains of Colorado with Mountaintop, a Bernard Shakey + dhlovelife film with cinematographer Adam C.K. Vollick.

Abramorama, Eagle Rock Release ZZ Top Doc

Abramorama and Eagle Rock Entertainment are releasing a Banger Films documentary feature film that tells the story of how three oddball teenage bluesmen – Billy Gibbons, Dusty Hill, and Frank Beard – became ZZ Top, one of the biggest, most beloved bands on the planet, all while maintaining a surrealist mystique that continues to intrigue fans and entice onlookers a half century after the band’s inception. All three band members will be in attendance at the premiere, as they prepare to embark on their 50thAnniversary Tour.

Woodstock Returning to Theatres Nationwide

Fifty years later, the groundbreaking film that captured the original Woodstock music festival has become one of the most acclaimed documentaries ever produced – and Fathom Events is partnering with Warner Bros. to bring it back to movie theaters for one night only. Woodstock: The Director’s Cut will play at 7:00 p.m. local time, August 15, in movie theaters nationwide.

Battery Life Key Part of Success in Documentaries

Documentary filmmakers understand that the job requires contending with all kinds of weather, environmental conditions, outside noise and un-trained talent. Freelance cinematographer Neil Fernandez, owner of Lucky Finn Productions, has traveled to the Black Rock Desert to shoot a short about Burning Man, along Route 66 filming Alien Highway for the Travel Channel and to Bora Bora, Jamaica and the Bahamas to shoot various swimsuit campaigns.
