The Hollywood Section of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers has announced that the increasingly popular practice of phoneography – the use of smartphones as image-capture devices in film and television productions – will be the topic of its September meeting.
The VariCam Pure is the latest addition to the Panasonic’s family of professional cinematography products. Capable of uncompressed, 4K RAW acquisition, it is a co-production between Panasonic and Codex that couples the existing VariCam 35 camera head with a new Codex V-RAW 2.0 recorder, ideal for episodic television shows and features.
Codex has developed a fully integrated recording and workflow system for Canon’s new Cinema EOS C700 camera. The combination of Codex with the EOS C700 camera allows for high-speed 4.5K Raw recording at up to 100fps, 4K Raw at up to 120fps, 4K Apple ProRes at up to 60fps, 2K Apple ProRes at up to 240fps.
Panasonic has added five camera kit packages for the VariCam LT Super 35mm Cinema Camera with the addition of the ProEX-B512 package.
When FuseMedia of Aspen, Colorado was founded a decade ago, it was among the first companies dedicated to the production of online video. According to production director Chris Macdonald, FuseMedia has been committed to creating "engaging, brand-specific, and emotionally packed" high definition video as a marketing tool for business across the Rocky Mountain West. Now the company has moved into 4K production.

When Luke Sauer, veteran director of photography of reality television production, including Wives with Knives and I (Almost) Got Away with It, was selected to shoot the Lasso he knew it would involve a lot of night shoots. Lasso, a survive the night thriller directed by Evan Cecil, centers around senior community center workers Kit (Lindsey Morgan) and Simon (Andrew Jacobs), whose lives are turned upside when they find themselves fighting to stay alive against a group of bloodthirsty cowboys from the local rodeo. Lasso is his first feature project. Currently in post-production, the film is slated for an early 2017 release.

Director of photography Art Aldrich recently completed a 10-day shoot at the KPMG WPGA Championship in Sammamish, Washington. Aldrich, who numbers major broadcast and cable networks, Fortune 500 companies, advertising agencies and independent production facilities among his clients, is a longtime Panasonic user, and recently purchased three VariCam LT 4K cinema camcorders to support his extensive video work in corporate branding.
Director/DP Hal Long had a challenge. “The producers (including Bill Rogin and Cole Klapman) are committed to having a 4K master for residual use,” Long said. “And for season two, I wanted a 4K camera that would deliver better color accuracy and separation.” Long, a longtime user of Panasonic P2 cameras said that was why both seasons of Gunny Time were shot and finished in 4K with Panasonic VariCam 35 4K cinema camera/recorders.
