Director Josh Greenbaum’s acclaimed feature documentary The Short Game is now available on Netflix and DVD. The movies profiles eight talented and engaging young competitors at The World Championships of Junior Golf, in Pinehurst, North Carolina, and at their homes in various countries around the world (South Africa, the Philippines, France, China, the United Kingdom and the United States). Filming with the help of 18 Cinema EOS C300 cameras and a variety of lenses from Canon. The Short Game included everything from traditional documentary-style visits to the homes of the eight young golfers for character-based footage, to extensive tournament coverage.
Codex recording and workflow technology was used at the heart of the production to post pipeline on 20th Century Fox’s latest superhero movie X-Men: Days Of Future Past. A combination of Codex Onboard Recorders, in-camera XR recording, and Vault systems, enabled the filmmakers to deploy a variety of Arri Alexa cameras, shooting both native 3D and 2D using ArriRaw, and to maximize image quality on-set and during post-production.
JVC Professional Products Company announces the availability of its Version 3.0 firmware upgrade for its GY-HM600 and GY-HM650 mobile news cameras. Available through the JVC Web site, the upgrade is free to all current GY-HM600 and GY-HM650 owners.
The 2011 Rise of the Planet of the Apes unleashed a cross-species thriller and, on July 11, the sequel, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, directed by Matt Reeves and shot by cinematographer Michael Seresin will debut in U.S. theatres. Although most 3D movies currently are shot in 2D and converted to 3D in post-production, this movie was shot in native 3D. Seresin, who also shot a significant portion of Gravity, faced his first experience shooting native 3D. Although he doesn’t consider himself a “technical cinematographer,” Seresin felt confident. “Lighting, composition, and camera moves is what I like,” he says.
When cinematographer Colt Seman and colleagues, Dylan Trussell and David Dinetz of Culprit Creative were charged with creating the music video for Korn’s Spike in My Veins, they decided to go beyond the expected. For the edgy video, they deployed the new Bolt Cinebot high speed robotic camera arm, the 1000fps, high-definition Phantom Miro camera; and Schneider-Kreuznach Cine-Xenar III prime lenses.
Advanced Systems Group provided camera and editing equipment for The Galapagos Affair: Satan Came to Eden, a new documentary released by Zeitgeist Films that is being screened in U.S. theaters through June.
Codex introduced the Action Cam earlier this month at the National Association of Broadcasters show in Las Vegas. The camera delivers high-definition shooting, capture, transcoding and data management for situations that require a compact form factor and low weight. At the National Association of Broadcasters show earlier this month in Las Vegas Blackmagic Design introduced Blackmagic Ursa, a high-end digital film camera the company says is “designed to revolutionize workflow on set.” Built to handle the ergonomics of large film crews as well as single person use, Ursa has multiple accessories built in, including a massive 10 inch fold out on set monitor, large user upgradable Super 35 global shutter 4K image sensor and internal dual Raw and Apple ProRes recorders.

In what was arguably the hit of the event, AJA Video Systems unveiled the Cion camera at the National Association of Broadcasters show earlier this month in Las Vegas. The totally new camera features an ergonomic design and is capable of shooting at 4K/UltraHD and 2K/HD resolutions. AJA pioneered lens-to-post Apple ProRes workflows with the introduction of the Ki Pro product line in 2009 and Cion builds on this achievement by offering in-camera recording directly to the Apple ProRes family of codecs - including 12-bit 444 - for pristine image capture.
