HPA Announces Nominees for 2022 Creative Awards

The Hollywood Professional Association Awards Committee has announced nominees for the 2022 HPA Awards creative categories. Recognized as the standard bearer for creative accomplishment and technical innovation, the HPA Awards honor outstanding achievement and artistic excellence by both individuals and teams. This year’s categories have been expanded to include Outstanding Color Grading, Editing, and Sound for Documentary/Nonfiction and Outstanding Supporting Visual Effects.

Sixth Annual Digital Cinema Media Awards Announced

The sixth annual Digital Cinema Media Awards, held in partnership with Campaign, took place this week at BAFTA. Leading figures from the media and advertising worlds came together to celebrate and reward the most impactful cinema advertising work created by the industry. The big winners on the night were Disney+ The Walking Dead and Publicis Imagine’s Frighteningly Good: How Disney+ Jump Started Their 18+ Audience campaign.

DTLA Film Festival Names Winners

The 13th annual DTLA Film Festival has announced its winners. Florencia Krochik’s The Rest of Us, a feature documentary about DACA kids shot over a decade, won Best Picture. Other winners included director Martin Torrez’ The Great American Low Rider Tradition, a feature documentary about the Lowrider culture of East Los Angeles, which took the Audience Favorite Award Sophie Galibert was named Best Director for Cherry, a narrative dramedy that tackles the hot-button topic of abortion.

Dolby Announces GFS Film School Winners

Dolby Laboratories today announced the winners of the Dolby Institute x Ghetto Film School Filmmaker Challenge: Finish the Script Year 2. The program challenges GFS alumni ages 18—35 to create an original short film proposal in response to a creative prompt from Academy Award-nominated filmmaker and returning mentor Carlos López Estrada (Raya and the Last Dragon, Blindspotting). This year’s winners are filmmakers Kaitlyn Ali, Britney Bautista, Miguel Ramirez, and Thomas Sawyer.

SOC Accepting Submissions for Technical Achievement Awards

The Society of Camera Operators is now accepting submissions for the 2022 Society of Camera Operators Technical Achievement Awards. All submissions must be for technology that is used by the camera operator and camera crew during production, and applications must be submitted by November 30, 2022. The winning award recipients will be presented in-person at the SOC Lifetime Achievement Awards dinner and celebration on Saturday, February 25, 2023, at the Loews Hollywood Hot

Göteborg Supports Ukrainian Filmmaker at Festivals; Calls for Grant Submissions

Antonio Lukich, one of the four Ukrainian directors visiting Göteborg Film Festival on a residency stay for three months will be showing the world premiere of his second feature film, the black comedy Luxembourg, Luxembourg at the Venice International Film Festival and at the Toronto International Film Festival. At the same time, the Göteborg Film Fund has opened submissions for development grants for filmmakers working within Ukraine.

ShowEast Cites Three in Honoring Entire Exhibition Industry with Icon Award

ShowEast and the National Association of Concessionaires have announced that the 2022 ShowEast Icon Award will be presented to the entire motion picture exhibition industry, as represented by three unique companies and people: Marcus Theatres represented by Rob Novak, Santikos Theatres represented by Rob Lehman and Cranford Theatres represented by Doreen Sayegh are each credited with leading the NAC, and the exhibition industry out of the pandemic and into recovery.

Location Managers Honor Red Nation Celebration Institute

Last Saturday the ninth annual Location Managers Guild International Awards show was held at Los Angeles Center Studios. The LMGI Awards honor the outstanding and creative visual contributions by location professionals in film, television, and commercials from around the globe. Outstanding service by film commissions is also recognized for their support above and beyond during the production process.
