Autodesk Acquires Maxion

Autodesk has acquired Moxion, the New Zealand-based developer of a cloud-based platform for digital dailies used by leading filmmakers on some of the world’s most complex and challenging productions, including The Midnight Sky, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and The Matrix Resurrections. The acquisition of Moxion’s talent and technology will expand Autodesk’s own cloud platform for media and entertainment upstream, moving beyond post-production into production, bringing new users to Autodesk while helping better integrate processes across the entire content production chain.

MetaMedia Expands Thanks to HCL Technologies Partnership

Upon securing a long-term partnership agreement with the leading global technology company HCL Technologies, MetaMedia, the global, cloud-based distribution platform for cinemas, drive-ins, and other out-of-home venues, has expanded its entertainment network to more than 3,000 screens across the U.S. and Canada, covering all the top 50 cities.

Piracy Has No Boundaries

A new report from content protection specialist Nagra, entitled Piracy Has No Boundaries, claims that thieves steal tens of billions of dollars of content value annually and that more than 80 percent of content theft is attributable to streaming. In addition, the report says, eight percent of U.S. households subscribe to illicit internet protocol services for an estimated $1 billion in illegal subscription revenue every year. The report uses Disney and Marvel Studio’s Black Widow as an example of how things can go wrong when feature films are streamed and estimates that the film lost between $50-$70 million because the movie lacked an exclusive theatrical window over its first ten days of release.

Adobe Acquires Frame.io

Adobe has completed its acquisition of Frame.io, the cloud-based video collaboration platform. The combination of Adobe’s video editing offerings—including Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe After Effects—with Frame.io’s cloud-based review and approval functionality will radically accelerate the creative process and deliver an end-to-end video platform, the companies said.

MTI Upgrades Nova Digital Restoration Software

MTI Film has released DRS Nova v5, the latest version of its digital restoration software. The company says V5 has new features to perform common restoration tasks more easily and manage projects more efficiently, especially those delivering in 4K high dynamic range. MTI Film also introduced Shine, a utility for DRS Nova that automates the filtering of dirt and fleeting scratches, reducing the time to make those repairs by as much as 70 percent.
