The California Academy of Sciences Adopts Dolby’s 3D System The new California Academy of Sciences a combination aquarium planetarium natural history museum and scientific research institution located in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park has installed Dolby’s 3D digital cinema system. Working with media and technology consultants Visual Acuity the Academy installed the system in its new Hearst Forum’s 3D theatre. The theatre is currently screening Bugs! an educational 3D movie that complements the Academy’s rainforest exhibit. As the world’s largest Platinum-rated public building the Academy looked for an ecologically responsible technology to echo its vision. Beyond the premium quality and reliability of Dolby 3D technology Dolby’s reusable glasses are an ideal fit with the Academy’s mission to maintain an environmentally sound facility. Dolby’s 3D glasses are high-performance eco-friendly passive glasses that require no batteries or charging and can be reused hundreds of times without sacrificing image quality.

“Selecting an environmentally-friendly 3D system was one of our goals ” says Ryan Wyatt director of Morrison Planetarium and Science Visualization at the Academy. “The Dolby 3D Digital Cinema system appealed to us because it employs reusable glasses. In addition the use of a washer modified from 220V to 480V enables the Academy to consume less power helping us to meet our green requirements. That’s an added benefit to a system that also offers the most impressive 3D image quality I’ve experienced. We wanted to use the latest technology to bring science closer to our audiences to immerse them in our content and to inspire them to protect the natural world.” “We work with 3D technology in projects all over the world and have been very impressed with the Dolby 3D Digital Cinema system ” says Blair Parkin founder and managing director of Visual Acuity. “The visuals are outstanding and the system’s flexibility fits the Academy’s specific needs from both an operational and environmental standpoint. Beyond the environmental advantages Dolby’s 3D system is extremely simple to operate with automation features that activate the show with the push of a button.”
“High-quality 3D digital cinema experiences have moved beyond the movie exhibitor to broader experiential venues like the California Academy of Sciences. This is a testament to the quality of the Dolby 3D solution ” says Page Haun senior director of cinema marketing Dolby Laboratories. “We are proud to be working with the California Academy of Sciences and Visual Acuity who sought delivery of a premium experience while doing their part to be environmentally savvy.” California Academy of Sciences www.calacademy.org Dolby www.dolby.com
